If past Billboard Music Awards are any indication of the slayage that awaits music fans on May 21st, then prepare yourself for a FIERCE fashion LIT-uation. Jam-packed with show-stopping performances, superstar collaborations and tons of must-see moments, the BBMAs are always music’s party of the year! Broadcasting LIVE from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the only thing hotter than Sin City’s heat is the BBMAs fashion.
Without further ado, here are seven times the BBMAs turned it all the way out…
YASSS Ari– take a bow! Rocking her signature high ponytail, Ariana delivered a mashup performance of “Dangerous Woman” and “Into You” that still has Arianators vogueing for their lives. Ariana paired oversized, high-waisted black slacks with a corseted bustier and juuuuust a couple of diamonds, proving that she can, in fact, wear literally anything.
The “Queen of Rap” decided to leave no weave behind as she snatched everybody’s wig in this floor-length Alexander McQueen gown with cutouts perfectly placed to reveal her “Pills n Potions.” This all black ensemble is a notably understated departure from the pastel fantasy she’s famous for serving, but her fans know that when it comes to Nicki Minaj… well, it’s best to expect the unexpected.
Making his BBMAs debut last year, Aussie singer Troye Sivan delivered a laser-laced, fog-filled rendition of his smash summer hit “Youth.” The Blue Neighborhood artist focused on subtle style details, opting to don a sequined polo in black-and-white stripes and gun-metal nail polish. (Oh, and don’t forget about Troye’s killer dance moves.)
The “Princess of Pop” kicked-off last year’s BBMAs with a mega-mix of her massive hits that had all her fans screaming, “YOU BETTA WORK B*TCH!” Just one minute into the performance, Britney tore away a jacket to reveal a jaw-dropping, sequin and beaded ensemble. What did Britney do for the remainder of the nearly 8-minute performance? Deliver razor-sharp choreography in scarlet knee-high boots. What did she not do? Break a sweat.
Three words: neon… metallic… shirtless. Nick Jonas took the BBMAs stage to belt a killer performance of his triple-platinum single, “Jealous,” sporting a metallic silver bomber jacket and wearing nothing underneath. Yep, just all kinds of bare-chestedness. Backdropped by tropical neon graphics and geometric lasers, Nick managed to deliver a performance that felt simultaneously vintage-inspired and futuristic. Needless to say, he had his fans going all *heart eyes emoji*.
Wearing what could be described as the fur of some fierce alien pet from planet OPULENCE, Rihanna performed an other-worldly rendition of “Love on the Brain.” Encased in a house of melting wax, the Anti artist crooned the moody single’s slinky melody whilst cast in emerald-colored light. Go ‘head, RiRi– WE SEE YOU!!
“Dearly beloved…” were the words that began a moment destined for music history. Madonna, dressed in a metallic three-piece suit embroidered with purple paisleys, lace-fringed bell sleeves and jewel-encrusted crucifixes, was joined on stage by Stevie Wonder to perform a legendary tribute fit for a Prince.
Now, the only question that remains is… what will happen at this year’s BBMAs? 😏
